Chameleon

Meeting the Lizard People

Last night, I had a lucid dream.

I found myself in an electronics lab standing next to a workbench full of test equipment - oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc. It was a warehouse-like setting. There was a young engineer seated on a tall chair in front of the workbench, concentrating on his work. Another engineer sat further down. I noticed that the scene was exceptionally clear and detailed and could easily be mistaken for reality.

So it was time to try out some reality checks. First, I realized that I couldn't remember how I got into the lab or why I was there. Next, I reached out and touched the engineer's hair to feel the texture. It was feathery, but I could barely feel it. In real life, most people would react to a stranger touching his hair, but he didn't react at all.

I started to walk away, but then I remembered that I should try to interact with the dream characters. I turned and asked him, "Who are you?" He didn't answer. I asked again more forcefully, but he still didn't respond.

So, I tried asking the other engineer (who seemed to be playing video games now), "Who are you?". No answer from him either. Since I wasn't getting an answer to my question, I asked a different question: "Well, then, who am I?". Still no answer. Getting exasperated, I asked "Are you human?". This time he turned to me and growled, "NOT. HUMAN.", and his long lizard-like tongue lashed out towards me. It scared me, but I felt that his action wasn't really an attack against me. He was just annoyed at my persistent questioning, and wanted me to leave them alone.

The dream ended here. It was a short dream and not very eventful. It did, however, allow me to try out some reality checks. It was also the first time I've remembered to question my dream characters and ask who they are. Perhaps, next time, instead of asking who they are, I should try asking what they represent.
